About this product
China aster “Pompon” (Callistephus chinensis) is a branching annual reaching up to 60 cm. The flower heads are up to 5 cm across, and each plant opens several at once, so the bed stays colourful for a long time.
Flowering starts about 90 days after sowing. At +18 °C the seed germinates in 7-11 days; it can also be sown straight into the bed in October. The aster needs a sunny position and fertile, free-draining, well-aerated soil, and it tolerates light frosts. Ideal for annual beds and for cutting.

Advice from our agronomist
Sow in March or April. Sow indoors into light compost about 0.5 cm deep and keep at +18 °C. Once seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, prick them out into individual pots.
Plant out in full sun. Move the plants into the bed in late May, 25-30 cm apart. Avoid freshly manured soil and places where asters grew the previous year.
Cut for bouquets. Cut stems when the flowers are almost fully open. In dry spells water at the base rather than over the leaves.
