About this product
Sweet basil “Dark Opal” (Ocimum basilicum) is a fragrant annual culinary and medicinal herb with deep purple leaves. Fresh and dried leaves are used, or leaves with the flowers. The seed belongs to the Organic Way organic range.
Basil can be grown in beds, on balconies and on windowsills. Sow indoors in February or March 1 cm deep, in a greenhouse from February to May, and outdoors in May or June. The recommended spacing is 15 x 15 cm. The dark foliage adds colour to dishes and beds.

Advice from our agronomist
Sow somewhere warm. Basil loves warmth: sow 1 cm deep and keep at +20-25 °C until germination. Water sparingly, as seedlings easily damp off in soggy compost.
Do not rush planting out. Move plants outdoors only once the nights are warm; in cold weather the leaves lose their colour and growth stalls. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot.
Pinch the tips. Once a plant has 3-4 pairs of leaves, pinch out the tip to encourage branching. Pick leaves regularly, and remove flower buds if you want more foliage.
