Water first, feed second. A solution on a dry rootball scorches roots. Plain water first, then the feed.

Weaker and more often. Two weak feeds a week serve a plant better than one strong one: the nutrients get used and no salts build up. A strong solution gives a quick green leaf and an equally quick stall.

Houseplants in winter. From November to February plants rest, light is short and there is no growth. Feed monthly or not at all — a plant fed in winter grows pale and drawn.

Foliar feeding. A 1 % spray helps when roots are damaged or the soil is too cold to take up food. Spray morning or evening, never in sun, and only on healthy leaves.

White crust on the soil or pot rim. Salt residue: the solution was too strong or the pot does not drain. Flush the pot through with plain water and dilute more thereafter.

When speed is needed. A pale, evenly yellowing young leaf means nitrogen is short; a yellow leaf with green veins means iron; browning leaf margins mean potassium — or too strong a solution. The first this feed fixes at once; the second calls for a look at soil pH.
