About this product

Sweet William “Pinocchio” (Dianthus barbatus) is a perennial grown as a biennial. The plants reach about 30 cm, and their bright flowers stand out against the dark foliage. The flat flower heads, around 10 cm across, bloom freely over a long period.

It flowers from June to August and is ideal for planters and cut-flower bouquets. It is not fussy about light, is frost-hardy and needs no winter cover. It prefers fertile, humus-rich soil. Seeds germinate in 8-10 days. The pack contains a colour mix.

The pack contains 0.5 g of seed, made by Žalia stotelė.

Advice from our agronomist

Sow in early summer. As a biennial, sweet William is sown in May or June into a nursery bed, 0.5-1 cm deep. In moist soil the seedlings appear within 8-10 days.

Move in August. At the end of summer transplant to the flowering position at 30 x 40 cm so the plants can root well before winter. A generous display follows the next summer.

Deadhead spent heads. Removing faded flower heads prolongs flowering and keeps plants tidy. For bouquets, cut the stems when half the florets have opened.
