Coleus “Improved Rainbow” (Coleus blumei) is a perennial that in our climate is grown as an annual. It is valued for its multicoloured ornamental foliage: the mix gives plants in many colours and patterns.
The plants look their best from June to September. Coleus suits flower beds, patio pots and balcony boxes. In a sunny spot the leaf colours are at their brightest; the soil must not dry out or the plants wilt. Cutting back older shoots and pinching the tips keeps them bushy.

Advice from our agronomist
Sow on the surface. Coleus seed is very fine: in March or April scatter it over moist seed compost, press lightly and cover with film. It needs light and about +20-22 °C to germinate.
Harden off first. Move plants outdoors only once night frosts are over, in early June, and acclimatise them to outdoor air for a week beforehand.
Pinch the tips. When plants reach 10-15 cm, pinch out the tips and remove flower buds so the energy goes into the leaves. Water regularly, especially in containers.
