About this product

Larkspur (Consolida ajacis, syn. Delphinium ajacis) is grown in Estonia as an annual and reaches up to 45 cm in flower. Upright stems carry dense spikes of spurred flowers above finely divided, feathery foliage.

Larkspur is ideal for direct sowing, for the middle of a border and for cutting; the spikes also dry well. It prefers full sun and loose soil. All parts are poisonous, so plant it away from children and pets.

The pack contains 1 g of seed.

Advice from our agronomist

Sow where it is to flower. Larkspur has a taproot and resents transplanting. Sow in April or May once the soil is workable, about 1 cm deep; the seed germinates well in cool soil.

Thin in good time. Leave 15-20 cm between plants so the spikes grow sturdier and do not flop.

Try an autumn sowing. Seed sown into cold soil in late autumn comes up early in spring and flowers sooner. Cut spikes for vases once the lowest flowers open.
