Advice from our agronomist
When to sow. Sow for seedlings from mid-April to early May in 8–10 cm pots at 2–3 cm depth and 25–30 °C; seedlings appear in 5–7 days.
Planting. Plant seedlings in late May – early June in a greenhouse or under plastic once the soil has warmed to at least 15 °C; spacing 70 × 70 cm. Choose the sunniest, warmest spot.
Care. Water with warm water at the roots, less while the fruits ripen so they are sweeter; pinch the main stem after 5–6 leaves and leave 3–4 fruits per plant. Support the fruits so they do not touch the ground.
Feeding and harvest. Feed with potassium- and phosphorus-rich fertiliser, nitrogen only moderately. Fruits ripen from August to September, when they smell sweet and the stalk near the fruit cracks.
