Red roses (Rosa) up to 40 cm tall are compact roses with scarlet and deep red flowers, suited to pots, balconies, border edges and the front of a flower bed. The cultivar and exact type are not stated, so the description follows the species and group (low garden and potted roses).

Planting. Choose a sunny, airy spot without draughts. Dig a hole wider than the root ball, add compost and set the graft union 3-5 cm below the surface. The best time is May or September.
Care. In spring remove frost-damaged and weak shoots, and in the season deadhead faded flowers. Mulch the soil with bark or compost to hold moisture and suppress weeds.
Watering and feeding. Water infrequently but deeply, at the roots and without wetting the foliage. Feed with a rose fertiliser in spring and early summer, and avoid nitrogen after July.
Winter care and pruning. In autumn mound soil or peat 15-20 cm around the shoot bases and cover with spruce branches. Do the main pruning in spring, leaving 3-5 healthy buds per shoot. Keep potted roses in a cool, bright place over winter.
