Advice from our agronomist
Sowing Sow in mid-May to early June directly in the ground 3–4 cm deep once the soil has warmed to at least 12–14 °C; seedlings emerge in 7–10 days. Sow 25–30 cm apart in rows 60–70 cm apart, in several rows for pollination. For an earlier crop, start seedlings in pots.
Care Water in dry spells, especially during flowering and cob filling; hoe and weed. Feed once or twice with a balanced fertiliser during growth. Hill up the soil around tall plants.
Harvest Harvest cobs at the milk stage, about 18–24 days after the silks appear, when the silks have browned and a pressed kernel gives milky juice. Use or freeze at once, as the sugar quickly turns to starch.
