Sowing Sow from late April to early June 1–2 cm deep in loose, stone-free soil, with rows 20–25 cm apart. Seedlings emerge in 10–20 days; keep the soil moist throughout.

Care Thin to 3–4 cm when the seedlings are 2–3 cm tall and keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid fresh manure, and protect the crop with a fleece cover against the carrot fly, which is attracted by the smell released during thinning.

Harvest Young carrots are ready to eat in July; lift the autumn crop before the hard frosts and store it in sand in a cool, damp cellar.
