When to sow Sow the seeds for seedlings in February–March on the soil surface (they need light), do not cover them with soil; keep moist at 20–25 °C. Seeds germinate in 2–4 weeks.

Planting out When the seedlings have grown, prick them out into separate pots and plant them in their permanent place in early June. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil.

Care Water generously, especially in the first years. The tree grows very fast and can reach 25 m, with a spreading open crown and large heart-shaped leaves.

Feeding and harvest Feed with compost in spring. It is frost-tender: keep it in a cool place or cover it in the first winters; suitable for zones 5–9. It begins to flower at 8–10 years.
