When to sow Sow the seeds for seedlings in February–March on the soil surface (they need light), covered with only a thin layer of soil and keep at 18–22 °C. Seeds germinate in 2–3 weeks.

Planting out Plant the seedlings out in late May, 100 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot.

Care Water moderately, more in dry spells, and keep the bed weed-free. In Estonia the plant needs winter protection: tie the leaves together and cover the crown; growing it in a container and overwintering it in a cool place is safest.

Feeding and flowering Feed 1–2 times with a flowering-plant fertiliser and remove faded flowers – this prolongs flowering. Flowers in August–October; height 150–250 cm. A perennial; cover for winter.
