Advice from our agronomist
When to sow. Sow directly in the bed in April – early May at 2 cm depth, rows 30 cm apart. Use only fresh seed – old seed germinates poorly. Emergence takes 2–3 weeks.
Sowing. Thin plants to 10 cm apart. Choose deeply loosened, stone-free soil; do not use fresh manure.
Care. Water evenly, loosen between rows and keep the bed weed-free. Wear gloves – the leaf sap can cause burns in sunlight.
Feeding and harvest. Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser. Harvest roots in October – November after the first frosts (which make them sweeter) or leave them in the ground over winter.
