Advice from our agronomist
When to sow. Sow directly in the bed in late July – early August for an autumn crop (1–1.5 cm deep), or in a greenhouse in April; in long days the plants tend to bolt.
Planting. Thin plants to 30 × 40 cm; seedlings also work – prick out at 2–3 true leaves and plant out at 3–4 weeks old.
Care. Water regularly and evenly, never letting the soil dry out; cover young plants with fleece against pests (flea beetles) and mulch the soil.
Feeding and harvest. Feed 2–3 times with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser. Harvest heads 60–70 days after sowing, before hard frosts; store in a cool place.
