Light to germinate. Petunia germinates in light: do not cover the sown seed. The seed is pelleted, so sow thinly — no thinning needed.

Sow early. February or March. A later sowing only flowers at the end of July; without extra light the seedlings stretch on a windowsill, so supplementary lighting pays.

Feed weekly. Petunias are hungry plants: in containers feed weekly with a weak liquid fertiliser. Pale leaves always mean underfeeding, not disease.

Watering. Never let the compost dry out completely, and never let it stand in water — a little every day beats a lot once a week.

When it goes leggy. By mid-July every petunia stretches and goes bare at the base. Cut it back by a third without hesitation and feed it — in two weeks it is full of flowers again.
