Work it in and water. In dry soil a granule will not dissolve; from fertiliser left on the surface some nutrient is lost to the air.

For trees and shrubs. Spread under the edge of the canopy, not against the trunk: the feeding roots are where the canopy casts its shade.

Not against the plant. A granule on a stem or leaf leaves scorch marks.

An opened pack. Close it properly and keep it dry — in damp the fertiliser cakes.

In summer. One spring application covers the staple; in July give a liquid feed if needed rather than more granules.
