About this product

Spinach dock (Rumex patientia × R. tianschanicus) is a perennial, drought-tolerant and winter-hardy leafy crop. Its first leaves appear in early spring as soon as the snow melts and are far larger than those of common sorrel. Plants reach 0.8–1.5 m in height.

The young leaves are eaten: nutritious, rich in vitamins and minerals, and low in oxalic acid. Use them in salads, soups and fillings, or freeze and preserve them. Sow in April–May or August at 35 × 7 cm and harvest from April to September.

The pack contains 1 g of seed (about 350 seeds), made by Žalia stotelė.

Advice from our agronomist

Choose a permanent spot. Spinach dock stays in one place for several years, so sow it at the edge of the plot where it will not crowd other beds. Sow in rows 1–2 cm deep and keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge.

Thin the seedlings. Leave 35 cm between rows and about 7 cm between plants. Pick sparingly in the first year so the roots can establish.

Cut off flower stems. Removing flower stems as soon as they appear keeps the plant producing young leaves until autumn and stops it self-seeding across the garden.
