About this product
Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) — a leguminous green manure that fixes nitrogen from the air with the help of root nodule bacteria and leaves it in the soil for the next crop. It is free fertiliser that the plant delivers itself.
Sainfoin’s taproot goes deep — a metre or more — and brings up nutrients from depths vegetable roots cannot reach. At the same time it breaks up the compacted subsoil. Sainfoin tolerates drought and chalky soil, where clover no longer does well, and in flower it is an excellent bee plant.
The pack contains 100 g.

Advice from our agronomist
Not for acid soil. Sainfoin wants neutral or limy ground; on an acid bed it sulks and forms no nodules.
Give it time. In the first year sainfoin grows slowly — it does its main work in the second, once the root is deep.
Cut at the start of flowering. That is when nitrogen in the roots peaks and the stem has not yet gone woody.
