Lisianthus “Arena 2 Purple Picotee” F1 (Eustoma grandiflorum) is an elegant F1 hybrid, also sold as eustoma. In our climate it is grown as an annual. The term Picotee means the pale flowers are edged with a purple rim, giving them a particularly refined look.
Lisianthus is a prized cut flower: the rose-like blooms on sturdy stems last a long time in the vase. The plant needs a long growing season, so it is sown indoors in winter. Grow it in a sunny, sheltered spot or in a greenhouse, in fertile, well-drained soil.

Advice from our agronomist
Sow on the surface in winter. Lisianthus seed is tiny: from December to February place it on moist compost without covering, then lay film on top. Keep in a bright place at +20-22 °C; seedlings grow very slowly at first.
Give extra light. In winter the seedlings need supplementary lighting. Prick them out carefully, as the roots are delicate.
Plant out after the frosts. In early June set plants in a warm spot or a greenhouse. Water moderately and support taller stems so they do not snap under the weight of the blooms.
