About this product

Shelling pea "Avola" (Pisum sativum) — an early bush variety with wrinkled, marrowfat seed. It is the wrinkle that makes the pea sweet: sugar turns to starch more slowly in such seeds, so the pods still taste good if you are a couple of days late picking.

The plants grow 45–60 cm tall and stand up by themselves — no tall support needed, a low net or some twigs will do. Pods fill in June and July, about 60–70 days after sowing, and almost all at once: a whole row can be picked clean in a fortnight.

The pack holds 50 g of seed — roughly 200–250 peas, or 8–10 metres of row. Producer Baltic Agro, Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist

When to sow. Peas do not fear cold: the seed germinates at +6 °C and seedlings take a light frost. Sow the first row as soon as the ground has dried, then add two more at fortnightly intervals — otherwise the whole crop arrives in one week.

About the soil. Peas fix their own nitrogen, so they need no nitrogen feed, and fresh manure actively harms them: the plant makes haulm and few pods. Give potassium and phosphorus in spring.

Sowing depth. 4–5 cm, 5 cm apart in the row, 25–30 cm between rows. Soak the seed for a couple of hours in lukewarm water — it comes up a couple of days sooner.

Picking. Pick ripe pods regularly: the more often you pick, the longer the plant sets new ones. One forgotten pod stops a whole shoot.

After harvest. Cut the haulm but leave the roots in the soil: the nodule bacteria enrich the bed with nitrogen for the next crop.
