Common purslane Portulaca oleracea 'Purslane Green' is a succulent salad green from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy purslane seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the packet holds 1 g.
A perennial grown here as an annual, it has fleshy leaves and young shoots rich in vitamins C and A, with a fresh, slightly lemony taste; they are said to whet the appetite and quench thirst. Add purslane to salads, soups and cottage cheese.
It grows very fast – the first leaves can be cut about 3 weeks after sowing. Sow after the spring frosts on the surface, without covering the seed. Purslane likes sun and light, well-worked, fertilised soil.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Purslane loves warmth: sow outdoors once the frosts are over and the soil has warmed, or in a greenhouse from May. The seed is tiny – scatter it on the surface, press lightly with your palm and do not cover with soil.
Watering and feeding. Keep the surface moist with a fine spray until seedlings appear. Established plants tolerate drought, but regular watering gives juicier leaves. Compost dug in when preparing the bed is enough.
Care. Thin seedlings to 10–15 cm and weed while plants are small. Cut shoots 8–10 cm long, leaving 2–3 leaves at the base – the plants quickly regrow.
Gardener's tip. Do not let purslane flower and set seed, or it can become a weed in the garden. Resow every 3–4 weeks for a steady supply of fresh leaves.
