About this product

Bugle "Mahogany" is a ground-cover perennial with glossy, near-black mahogany leaves and blue flower spikes in spring. Buy Ajuga in a 9 cm pot in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

Only 15–20 cm tall, it spreads quickly by runners into a dense carpet. In May–June it bears deep blue spikes. The foliage is semi-evergreen and most intense in spring.

An excellent ground cover for part shade and shade: under shrubs, on banks, along paths and in containers. Fully hardy in Estonia (RHS H7) and loved by bees. Prefers moist, humus-rich soil; leaves scorch in dry full sun.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant from spring to autumn 25–30 cm apart, 9–11 plants per m² for a quick carpet.

Watering. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first season and in hot weather. A compost mulch holds moisture.

Care. No pruning needed. Spent spikes can be cut off for a tidy look. If runners spread too far, simply remove surplus rosettes.

Gardener's tip. Divide and replant rosettes in late autumn or early spring – an easy way to get new plants for other corners of the garden.
