Lady's mantle (Alchemilla) is a tough, undemanding perennial whose soft, rounded leaves hold silvery water droplets like pearls after rain or dew. The species of this plant is not specified; the one most often grown in gardens is soft lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis). Buy Alchemilla in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The plant forms a dense clump 30–50 cm tall, covered from June to August with airy yellow-green flower sprays that are also lovely in bouquets. Lady's mantle is a superb edging plant and ties together roses, hardy geraniums and other summer flowers.
Lady's mantle is very hardy (USDA zone 3–4) and grows without problems in Estonia. It thrives in sun and part shade in almost any soil that is not too dry. Ideal for border edges, rose beds, ground cover under trees and as a cut flower.

Planting. Plant from spring to September in sun or part shade, 35–45 cm apart. Lady's mantle is not fussy about soil, but add compost to dry sandy soil. Plant at the same depth as in the pot.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly for the first weeks, later only in prolonged drought – in a dry summer the leaves lose their freshness. In spring compost or a little general fertiliser is enough.
Care. After flowering cut the flower stems and old leaves back close to the ground – within a few weeks fresh foliage appears, sometimes with a second flush of flowers. This also prevents excessive self-seeding.
Gardener's tip. Lady's mantle is the perfect companion for roses: it covers the soil, keeps it moist and its yellow-green tone sets off the rose colours. Photograph the leaves in the morning dew – the droplets are truly beautiful.
