Japanese anemone (Anemone hupehensis) is an autumn-flowering perennial that brings colour to the border when most flowers have finished. Varieties are assorted – with pink, mauve and white flowers. Buy Japanese anemone in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

It forms a clump of dark green, divided leaves topped by branching flower stems 50–100 cm tall. The 5–6 cm flowers with golden stamens open from August to October.

The species is very hardy (RHS H7, USDA 5–9) and suits the Estonian climate. Good for part-shade borders, in front of trees and shrubs, and for cutting.

Agronoma ieteikumi

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in part shade where the soil does not dry out. Add compost to the planting hole; space plants 50–60 cm apart.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly in dry summers – Japanese anemone dislikes drought. Mulch with compost or give a balanced fertiliser in spring.

Care. Cut back spent stems and dead leaves in spring. Mulch the roots with leaves or spruce branches in the first winter. It spreads by root suckers – limit it if needed.

Gardener's tip. Japanese anemone dislikes being moved – choose its permanent spot from the start and give it a year or two to settle; then it flowers generously every autumn.
