About this product

Aquilegia "Kirigami" is a large-flowered hybrid series bred from the Rocky Mountain columbine (Aquilegia caerulea), with upward-facing bicoloured flowers that resemble folded paper. Buy Aquilegia "Kirigami" in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The flowers have long spurs in shades from red, rose and blue to yellow and white, usually with a white centre. Plants reach 40–60 cm and flower from late May to July; the series blooms uniformly and already in the first year.

Columbines suit part-shade borders, woodland edges and cutting. The flowers attract bumblebees and butterflies; hardy to zone 4.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in part shade or a spot with morning sun, in humus-rich soil. Space 30–35 cm apart and keep the crown at soil level.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially in the first summer and in dry spells – columbines dislike both drying out and standing water. Give a little compost or perennial fertiliser in spring.

Care. Cut back the flower stems after flowering unless you want self-seeding; the foliage stays tidy longer. Columbines are short-lived, so renew plants every 3–4 years.

Gardener's tip. Columbines cross easily – to keep the "Kirigami" colours, remove seed pods before they ripen.
