About this product

Columbine (Aquilegia) is a much-loved old-fashioned perennial whose spurred flowers float above airy foliage in late spring. The variety and flower colour of this plant are not specified – columbines are naturally very varied, with blue, purple, pink, white or bicoloured flowers. Buy Aquilegia in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The plant grows 40–80 cm tall and flowers from late May to early July, bridging the gap between spring flowers and summer perennials. The lacy blue-green leaves stay attractive after flowering. The flowers attract bumblebees and are good for cutting.

Columbine is very hardy (USDA zone 3–4) and grows without problems in Estonia. It prefers part shade or sun and loose, moisture-retentive soil. Ideal for cottage gardens, under trees, rock gardens and naturalistic borders; it self-seeds and so stays in the garden for years.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant from spring to September in part shade or sun, 30–40 cm apart. Columbine has a deep root, so choose the final spot straight away and plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil.

Watering and feeding. Water after planting and regularly for the first weeks, later in dry spells. In spring a little compost or general fertiliser is enough – too much nitrogen makes stems floppy.

Care. After flowering cut back the flower stems if you do not want self-sown seedlings; the foliage stays attractive. If the leaves look tired in late summer (mildew, leaf miners), cut them off – a fresh rosette soon grows back.

Gardener's tip. Columbines live 3–5 years but renew themselves by self-seeding. Leave a few seed heads to ripen – the seedlings may flower in exciting new colours. All parts of the plant are poisonous and not edible.
