Arabis alpina "Rosea" (syn. Arabis caucasica "Rosea") is a low spring-flowering perennial forming a grey-green mat covered in fragrant pink flowers in April–May. Buy Arabis "Rosea" in a 9 cm pot in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
It grows 15–20 cm tall and spreads 30–50 cm, so a few plants quickly fill gaps between stones or wall crevices. The downy grey leaves are evergreen and stay over winter.
"Rosea" is very hardy and undemanding: ideal for rock gardens, retaining walls and edging, and with spring bulbs. The early flowers are valuable for bees.

Planting. Plant in full sun in light, well-drained soil; add grit to clay. Space 25–30 cm apart; it also suits wall crevices and gaps between stones.
Watering and feeding. Water for the first weeks after planting, later only in long dry spells. No feeding is needed – too much nutrition makes the mat loose.
Care. After flowering, trim the flower stems and leggy shoots to keep the mat dense and slow down ageing. Rejuvenate old plants by division or cuttings.
Gardener's tip. Combine "Rosea" with blue violets or white tulips – they flower at the same time for a lovely spring picture.
