About this product
Sea thrift Armeria maritima "Splendens" is a low, evergreen cushion-forming perennial that flowers from May to July with round heads of deep pink-red blooms. Height with flowers is 15–20 cm, spread 25–30 cm.
Fine grass-like leaves form a dense tuft from which the flower stems rise like pompoms. It is drought tolerant and hardy, thrives on poor sandy soil and attracts bees and butterflies.
Use it for rock gardens, edging, gravel gardens, wall tops and containers. The medium-sized plant quickly fills out into a dense cushion.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny spot with well-drained sandy or gritty soil. Space plants 25–30 cm apart. On heavy clay add sand and grit, because wet soil causes rot.
Care. Care is minimal: after flowering remove spent flower heads to encourage repeat blooms and keep the tuft tidy. Remove dead leaves in early spring.
Watering and feeding. Water only in the weeks after planting and during long droughts; established plants tolerate dryness. Feeding is hardly needed, since rich soil reduces flowering; if necessary give a little balanced fertiliser in spring.
Winter care and pruning. Fully hardy and needs no cover. Divide plants every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to keep the cushion dense and floriferous.
