Asparagus "Argenteuil" (Asparagus officinalis) is a perennial vegetable whose young spears are eaten in spring. The packet holds 0.5 g of seed from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy asparagus seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
"Argenteuil" is an old French variety with thick spears. They are low in calories and mild in flavour, and can be boiled, fried or preserved.
Asparagus stays in one bed for 10–15 years. Spears are cut in May–June, with a full harvest from the third year. It is fully hardy in Estonia.

Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Soak the seeds for 3–4 days and germinate at 23–25 °C. Sow in pots in March–April or outdoors in May. Grow the plants on in a nursery bed for a year, then plant them 30–40 cm apart in 20 cm deep trenches the next spring.
Watering and feeding. Asparagus needs even moisture all season. Feed with compost or a balanced fertiliser in spring before the spears appear and again after harvest.
Care. Young plants are frost-tender – cover them at night outdoors. Earth up the growing shoots several times. In autumn cut the stems back to 10 cm and mulch the bed with 8–10 cm of peat or compost.
Gardener's tip. Do not cut spears for the first two years – let the plant build its roots and it will crop generously for decades.
