Perennial asters (Aster) are the stars of the autumn garden: they bloom from late summer until frost, when other flowers have finished. Varieties are assorted – white, pink, red, purple and blue. Buy perennial asters in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Depending on variety, asters grow 20–80 cm tall and flower from August to October with masses of star-shaped blooms. They are an important late food source for bees and butterflies.
Asters are hardy and undemanding and suit the Estonian climate well. Use them in borders, as edging, in containers and for cutting.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 30–50 cm apart for good air flow to prevent powdery mildew.
Watering and feeding. Water in dry summers, especially before flowering. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring; too much nitrogen makes stems flop.
Care. Cut stems back near the ground in spring. Taller varieties may need support. Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring.
Gardener's tip. Cutting back taller asters by a third in early June keeps them shorter and bushier, with more flowers.
