About this product

Astilbe Astilbe japonica Rheinland – a low, early- to mid-season cultivar with pink plumes.

A shade-tolerant perennial with feathery plumes and decorative foliage. Suits shady and partly shaded borders, pond edges and woodland gardens; flowers in summer with fluffy plumes and the dried flower heads decorate the garden in winter too.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting Plant in spring (May) or early autumn in partial or full shade in moist, humus-rich soil; in sun the plant needs constant moisture. Mix the soil with compost, set the crown level with the soil and water generously. Space plants 40–50 cm apart.

Watering Astilbe loves moist soil: water regularly, especially in dry spells and in sun; never let the soil dry out. Mulch with bark or compost.

Pruning You can leave the flower heads for winter interest; in spring cut dead stems near the ground. Divide a dense clump every 3–4 years.

Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or a complex fertiliser; a potassium-rich fertiliser can be given during flowering. Hardy; in autumn cover the crown with compost or mulch.
