Japanese barberry "Red Chief"

About this product
Japanese barberry "Red Chief" (Berberis thunbergii) is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub with deep red-purple foliage that holds its colour all season, turning bright red in autumn.
A dense, thorny shrub that works well as a hedge, in rock gardens and in single or group plantings. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries that stay on the branches for a long time.
Easy to grow, drought tolerant and hardy enough for Estonian winters. The strongest leaf colour develops in full sun. Buy Berberis thunbergii "Red Chief" at the Allikasilm garden centre.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny spot, 50–70 cm apart for a hedge. The soil must drain well; the roots do not tolerate standing water.
Care. Barberry is undemanding and grows in ordinary garden soil. Mulch around the base to suppress weeds and keep moisture in.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first year, later only during dry spells. In spring apply a general shrub fertiliser or a layer of compost.
Pruning and winter. In spring remove frost-damaged and crowded stems and shape the shrub. Trim hedges in midsummer and wear gloves because of the thorns. Fully hardy, no winter protection needed.
