Bergenia (Bergenia, elephant's ears) is an evergreen perennial with large glossy leathery leaves that form a dense carpet even in shady corners of the garden. In April-May pink bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage.
The plant is hardy (USDA zones 3-8), undemanding and well suited to rock gardens, planting under trees and path edges. In autumn the leaves turn bronze and reddish, so bergenia stays decorative all year.
This is an unnamed bergenia (species level; photo shows Bergenia cordifolia). Good for ground cover, mixed borders and shady beds.

Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Plant bergenia in spring or autumn in partial shade. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, keep the rhizome level with the soil and space plants 30-40 cm apart.
Care. No pruning is needed, just remove dead leaves and spent flower stems. Leaves may scorch in full sun, so partial shade is best.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in dry spells but avoid waterlogging. Add compost or a general fertiliser in spring; no more feeding is required.
Winter care. It overwinters in Estonia without cover, but leaves can be damaged; in spring cut off damaged leaves and fresh foliage will follow.
