Advice from our agronomist
Planting Plant in spring (May) or autumn in partial shade or sun in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil; leaves are bigger in shade and turn red in winter in sun. Set the rhizome near the soil surface and water. Space plants 30–40 cm apart.
Watering Water regularly in the first year and in dry spells; an established plant tolerates short droughts.
Pruning In spring remove frost-damaged and dead leaves and, after flowering, the spent flower stems; divide a dense clump every 4–5 years.
Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or a complex fertiliser. Hardy; in a cold snowless winter it can be covered with spruce boughs, as late frosts may damage the flowers.
