Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in a sunny spot in fertile soil, 40–50 cm apart. For containers use a pot of at least 5 litres.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in dry summers. Kale is a hungry crop – add compost at planting and feed with a vegetable fertiliser during summer.
Care. Pick the lower leaves gradually and leave the growing tip, so the plant keeps growing until late autumn. Check leaves for cabbage white caterpillars.
Gardener's tip. Let the leaves go through a couple of frosts – the flavour becomes sweeter and the colour deeper.
