About this product

Broccoli "Calabrese Natalino" is a late, high-yielding variety of Brassica oleracea var. italica. The seeds are from the Agronom brand (Agrofirma Sėklos, Lithuania), 1 g per packet (~300–340 seeds). Buy "Calabrese Natalino" broccoli seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

It forms medium-sized, round, dark green heads. Heads are ready 60–90 days after planting out, while the florets are still in bud. Plants are cold-hardy and tolerate frost down to −7 °C, so picking continues into late autumn.

Broccoli can be boiled, baked, fried, eaten raw or frozen. After the main head is cut, the plant produces side shoots with smaller florets. It needs full sun and fertile, moist soil.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Sow indoors in April, 1–2 cm deep; after germination keep seedlings bright and cool (15–18 °C by day) so they do not stretch. In May plant out seedlings with 4–5 leaves at 60 × 40–50 cm.

Watering and feeding. Broccoli needs moisture: water generously once or twice a week, more often in heat. Add compost before planting, give a nitrogen feed 2–3 weeks later and a balanced feed when heads form.

Care. Hoe and earth up the plants. Use fleece or netting against flea beetles and cabbage white butterflies. Do not grow broccoli after other brassicas.

Gardener's tip. Cut the head with 10–15 cm of stem while the buds are tight and green. Leave the plant: side shoots form within 2–3 weeks, and the cold-hardiness of "Calabrese Natalino" lets you pick them until November.
