Buxus sempervirens, or common box, is shaped here into a neat cone about 1 m tall – a ready-made topiary that instantly gives a garden, entrance or terrace a crisp, elegant line. Buy a box cone in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The small glossy dark green leaves stay on all year, and the dense growth takes clipping well, so the cone shape is easy to keep. A pair of cones by the door or a row along a path creates a classic formal garden look.
Box grows slowly, suits both open ground and a large container and tolerates partial shade. In Estonian winters it needs protection from late-winter sun and drying winds.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sheltered spot, or in a large container with a drainage hole. Add compost, plant at the same depth as before and water thoroughly.
Watering and feeding. Box dislikes both drying out and waterlogging. Water in dry spells and regularly in containers, and give a deep watering before the ground freezes. Feed in spring and early summer with evergreen fertiliser.
Care. Clip the cone once or twice a summer (early June and, if needed, early August) on an overcast day so the cut leaves do not scorch. Check regularly for box tree moth caterpillars and for leaf spotting and leaf drop caused by box blight.
Gardener's tip. From February to April cover the cone with white fleece and move containers against a house wall for winter, so the leaves do not scorch in late-winter sun and the roots do not freeze through.
