Common box Buxus sempervirens is the classic evergreen small-leaved shrub for low hedges, edging and topiary. Buy it in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery in two sizes: about 30 cm and medium.
Dense branches carry glossy dark green leaves all year round. In early spring (March–April) it bears tiny fragrant yellowish-white flowers, an early food source for bees. Box takes frequent clipping very well and keeps its shape for years.
It grows slowly and is easily kept to size by trimming; left unclipped it can reach 2 m. In Estonia it overwinters well in partial shade, sheltered from wind; young plants should be shaded from late-winter sun.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in partial shade, sheltered from wind, in fertile loamy soil; lime acid soil. For a hedge, space plants 20–30 cm apart (about 4–5 per metre).
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first summer and in droughts, and water thoroughly before the ground freezes. Feed with evergreen fertiliser in spring and early summer, not after July.
Care. Trim in late May–June and again in early August if needed, on an overcast day. Check regularly in summer for box tree moth caterpillars and shoot dieback, and act at once. Shade young plants in winter with spruce branches or fleece.
Gardener's tip. Late-winter sun on frozen ground dries box leaves to brown – keep the shading on until the soil has thawed.
