About this product

Feather reed grass Calamagrostis × acutiflora Karl Foerster – the best-known column-forming cultivar with airy bronze-gold plumes from June that last into winter.

A tall, upright ornamental grass whose airy plumes last into winter. Suits borders, groups, the front of hedges and screening; the plumes stay attractive in winter if the grass is not cut back in autumn.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting Plant in spring or autumn in sun to part shade in fertile, moderately moist soil; it also copes with heavy clay. Space plants 50–60 cm apart.

Watering Water regularly in the first year, later in dry spells; an established plant is fairly drought tolerant.

Pruning Cut the grass back to 10–15 cm in late February to March before new growth starts; leave the plumes standing for winter.

Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or a slow-release fertiliser; more is not needed, as too much nitrogen makes stems flop. Hardy; remove old dry foliage in spring.
