New Zealand hair sedge "Bronze" (Carex comans) is an evergreen, grass-like ornamental with fine, arching bronze-brown leaves forming a light fountain-shaped tuft.
It looks excellent in containers and hanging baskets, in rock gardens, along borders and as a contrast to grey or red foliage. The dense tuft gives texture all year round.
The sedge is undemanding and grows in sun or part shade. In Estonia it is sensitive to hard frost, so overwinter it in a pot in a bright cool room or protect it well. Buy Carex comans "Bronze" at the Allikasilm garden centre.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring after the last frosts in sun or part shade, 30–40 cm apart. In containers use good-quality free-draining potting mix.
Care. In spring comb out dead leaves with your fingers or cut the tuft back low. Divide congested clumps in spring.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet; container plants need more water in summer. Apply a mild fertiliser monthly from spring to midsummer.
Overwintering. In Estonia the sedge does not tolerate hard frost. Move pots to a bright frost-free room for winter, or cover bed plants with spruce boughs and fleece and keep them dry.
