Common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)

About this product
Common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a European deciduous tree valued for its dense crown and handsome autumn colour. Native to central and southern Europe, it suits specimen planting and hedges.
The young leaves are pleated with deep veins and turn yellow to golden brown in autumn. Dead leaves cling on for much of the winter, so a hedge stays dense.
It takes clipping well and works as a formal hedge or a free-growing tree. It prefers sun or part shade and tolerates heavy clay.

Watering and feeding. Water young plants in dry spells; mature trees manage alone. Give a balanced fertiliser in spring.
Winter and pruning. Fully hardy. Clip hedges in late June and, if needed, in February.
