About this product

Lawson cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) is an evergreen conifer with soft, fan-shaped blue-green sprays that keep the garden green all year round. Buy Lawson cypress in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery — container-grown plants.

The species comes from western North America (Oregon and northern California), where it grows into a large tree. In the garden it forms a dense conical crown and takes clipping well as a hedge; the branches are slightly drooping and the foliage is scale-like.

Use it as a specimen on the lawn, for a dense windbreak or screening hedge and in groups with other conifers and shrubs. A good choice for a calm evergreen backdrop.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sheltered spot with moist, well-drained fertile soil. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and water well after planting.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly in dry spells for the first two years — the root ball must not dry out. Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser and mulch with bark or compost.

Care. Trim hedges in spring and late summer only into green growth — old bare wood does not resprout. Remove dead branches.

Winter. Shade young plants from spring sun and drying winds during their first winters with fleece or spruce branches. Water thoroughly before the ground freezes so the foliage does not dry out in winter.
