Hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa, +/- 1 m

About this product
Chamaecyparis obtusa (Hinoki cypress) is a slow-growing evergreen conifer from Japan with glossy dark green scale-like leaves arranged in fan-shaped, gently curving sprays. Buy a Hinoki cypress about one metre tall in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The crown is dense and conical, and the red-brown bark peels in strips. It grows slowly, about 20–40 cm a year, so it stays compact for a long time and is ideal as a specimen tree, in Japanese-style gardens and in evergreen groups.
The species is frost hardy (RHS H6) and prefers moist, slightly acid soil. In Estonia give it a sheltered position where young plants are protected from winter winds and late-winter sun.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sheltered spot. Make the hole twice as wide as the root ball, add acid conifer compost and garden compost, keep the root collar at soil level and mulch with pine bark.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in the first two years and before winter. Feed in spring with conifer fertiliser; no nitrogen after August.
Care. No pruning is needed. Remove damaged shoots in spring; browning of old inner foliage is natural.
Gardener's tip. For the first winters shade the young tree with fleece from February to April so the late-winter sun does not scorch the foliage while the roots are still in frozen ground.
