About this product

Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera) "Filifera Nana" is a slow-growing dwarf conifer whose fine, thread-like drooping branchlets form a dense, broad, cushion-shaped crown.

A mature plant reaches about 1–1.5 m in height and is usually wider than tall. The soft green thread-leaf foliage suits rock gardens, slopes, the front of low hedges and large patio containers.

It prefers a sunny to partly shaded position and moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. In a sheltered spot it overwinters well in Estonia (USDA zone 5–8).

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sunny or lightly shaded spot sheltered from wind. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, keep the root collar level with the soil and mix in peat or compost.

Care. Mulch with 5 cm of bark or wood chips to keep the soil evenly moist. Do not cut back into old bare wood, as it will not regrow; remove only dead twigs.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly during the first two years and deeply in dry spells, as the plant dislikes prolonged drought. Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser and repeat with a small dose in June.

Winter and pruning. Cover young plants with spruce boughs in the first winters to protect them from spring sun and drying wind. No formative pruning is needed; if you wish, lightly shorten new growth in spring.
