About this product
Clematis "The President" is a large-flowered climber that covers trellises, fences and pergolas with deep violet-blue flowers. Supplied as a young plant in a 1 L pot that establishes well.
It grows 2–3 m tall. The flowers are deep violet-blue, large, 10–18 cm across, with pale stamens and purple anthers and appear in May–June on last year’s wood and again in August–September. It belongs to pruning group 2. The plant is hardy (to -26 °C, USDA zone 4) and suits Estonian gardens.
Ideal for pergolas, mesh fences, obelisks, house walls on a trellis and for growing through shrubs. A classic deep violet cultivar that flowers twice a summer.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant from spring to early autumn in sun or partial shade next to a support. Large-flowered clematis are planted 5–10 cm deeper than in the pot — this encourages new shoots and faster recovery from damage. Shade the root zone with low plants, stones or mulch.
Watering and feeding. Water infrequently but deeply so the soil is soaked well down; avoid standing water. Feed with a flowering-plant fertiliser in spring and before flowering; no nitrogen after August.
Care and pruning. Pruning group 2: the first flowers form on last year’s stems, so do not prune hard in spring. After the first flush lightly trim the flowered shoots; in autumn shorten stems by about a third and remove weak and dead ones.
Winter. Hardy, but to keep last year’s stems take them down from the support in late autumn, lay them on a dry base and cover with spruce branches or fleece. Mound compost or peat over the crown. Uncover gradually in spring.
