Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is a large shrub or small tree and one of the first to flower in spring. Yellow blooms open in March–April before the leaves.

In autumn it bears red edible fruit used for jams and compotes. The leaves are oval and turn reddish in autumn.

It is tough and long-lived, suitable as a specimen, hedge or wildlife planting, and tolerates chalky soil and drought.

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in sun or part shade in well-drained soil.

Care. Slow-growing and low-maintenance; remove old branches if needed.

Watering and feeding. Water young plants in dry spells. Compost or a balanced fertiliser in spring is enough.

Winter and pruning. Fully hardy. Prune after flowering only if needed.
