Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring or late summer in full sun, 25–30 cm apart. The soil must be loose and well-drained, as standing water causes root rot.
Watering and feeding. Water moderately, especially in dry weather and before flowering. Feed in spring with a flower fertiliser; too much nitrogen reduces blooming.
Care. Cut off spent flower heads to prolong flowering and encourage the plant to bloom again next year. No winter cover is needed.
Gardener's tip. Sweet William is a biennial: leave a few heads to set seed and it will self-sow, renewing the bed every year.
