About this product

Sweet William Dianthus barbatus 'Pinocchio' is a dwarf, double-flowered sweet William whose dense flat heads come in a mix of colours — white, pink, red and bicolours. The flowers are scented. Buy sweet William 'Pinocchio' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The compact plant reaches about 20–30 cm and flowers freely from midsummer to September. Dark foliage sets off the bright flower heads.

Use it at the front of borders, as edging, in window boxes and pots and for small posies. Sweet William is frost hardy and needs no winter cover.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant from May to August in sun or light shade, 20–25 cm apart, keeping the crown level with the soil.

Watering and feeding. Water moderately and avoid waterlogging. Feed with a flower fertiliser as flowering begins; lime acid soil lightly.

Care. Deadhead spent flower heads to prolong flowering and help the plant build strength for next year. Sweet William is short-lived, so renew plantings every 2–3 years.

Gardener's tip. Leave a few heads to set seed and the plant will self-sow, giving you new colourful seedlings.
