About this product

Dichondra hanging basket is a ready-made hanging basket with a cascade of slender trailing stems covered in small rounded leaves. It is one of the most striking balcony and patio plants: by late summer the lush curtain trails up to 1–1.5 m. The variety of this plant is not specified; the most widely grown is silver-leaved Dichondra argentea. Buy a Dichondra hanging basket in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

Dichondra is grown for its decorative foliage – its flowers are tiny and inconspicuous. The silver-grey leaves go with both bright and pastel summer flowers and set them off, yet look beautiful on their own in a hanging basket. The plant is drought tolerant and forgives a missed watering.

In Estonia Dichondra is grown as an annual: it is frost-tender and can go outside once night frosts are over, usually in mid-May. It loves sun and well-drained compost. Ideal for balconies, patios, under a canopy and large planters; in autumn the plant can be brought into a cool, bright room for winter.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Hang the basket outside once night frosts are over, in a sunny or lightly shaded spot sheltered from wind. If you repot into a larger basket, use light, well-drained potting compost; the container must have drainage holes.

Watering and feeding. Water when the top of the compost has dried – Dichondra copes with drought better than with waterlogging. In a hot summer check the hanging basket daily. Feed every 10–14 days from May to August with liquid balcony-plant fertiliser.

Care. Stems that become too long or sparse can be trimmed – the plant branches and becomes denser. The cut tips root easily in water or moist compost, giving you new plants.

Gardener's tip. In autumn, before frost, move the basket into a cool (10–15 °C), bright room and water sparingly in winter – this way Dichondra can be grown for several years. In spring shorten the stems and start feeding again.
