Advice from our agronomist

Planting Plant in spring or September in a sunny spot in well-drained, moderately fertile soil; space plants 40–50 cm apart. Add sand to heavy clay. Set the plant at the same depth as in the pot.

Watering Water regularly in the first year; established plants are drought-tolerant and need water only in long dry spells. Excess moisture causes root rot.

Pruning Remove faded flowers to prolong blooming; in autumn leave some seed heads for the birds and cut the stems down only in spring.

Feeding and winter care Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser or compost; too much nitrogen makes stems flop. Divide overgrown clumps every 3–4 years in spring. Flowers from July to September; height 75–90 cm. The plant is hardy and needs no protection; young plants may be mulched in their first winter.
